This exhibition explores how American artists have chosen to portray themselves since the beginning of the last century. The selfie, as we know it on social media, is a contemporary approach to creating a self- portrait. Our ensemble explored how this related to themselves, what ideas or images came to mind when hearing the word selfie, and what activities, people or images they would showcase in their selfie. They then created solos – a moving representation of their selfie. How do we relate to other selfies? What can we learn, share, or discover?

The Local Motion Youth Ensemble is comprised of students from the Local Motion Project youth dance program in Alexandria, Virginia. Local Motion Project is a non-profit organization whose mission it is to bring meaningful experiences to people’s lives through dance and other movement arts. We do this through youth and adult programs at the Local Motion Project Movement Arts Center, and provide dance residencies, workshops and professional development throughout the DMV area.
