Jane Franklin Dance is located in Northern Virginia and since 1997 has grown from three performances a year to thirty four performances during 2007 - 08. Innovative projects combine dance with digital and visual arts, neighborhood participation, and original music to reach approximately 11,500 people each year. Jane Franklin Dance was named The Best Dance Company in The Washington City Paper Best of DC 2008 and has earned recognition in the Washington DC metro area by promoting active participation in dance by people of all ages.
Based in Arlington County, Jane Franklin Dance began with a company of four dancers. In the ten years that have followed, the company has gained regional recognition.
• Today there are six dancers who rehearse and perform on an ongoing basis, three guest artists, and six additional outside professionals who assist in implementing community and education work.
• From a home office beginning, organizational effectiveness has been increased by adding an office space, a new staff position, an active Board of Directors, and 10-15 volunteers
• Jane Franklin is a 2008 recipient of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region Creative Communities Initiative grant for Breaking Ground a project combining round wall skateboarders with company dancers.
• Jane Franklin Dance made its international debut in 2008 at Foro Performatica a conference/festival at the Universidad Las Americas Puebla Mexico with Temporal Interference, a media and dance collaboration, which was consequently performed at the College of Arts and Media at University of Colorado Denver.
Dance education includes performances and workshops for Montgomery County Public Schools and for Arlington's Humanities Project. A STAR Award recipient for "Outstanding Community Outreach," Jane Franklin Dance's ongoing projects include work with the Senior Adult community and after school projects for youth. Jane Franklin Dance tours for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Paul Mellon Arts in Education Program and the Virginia Commission's Tour Directory.
The Board of Directors meets six to eight times yearly with committee meetings for development, programming, and planning on interim basis. At present we are hosting In Studio and donor cultivation events to increase the number of individual contributors. Board Members are chosen for their specific interest in Jane Franklin Dance, for their area of expertise, and for a belief that the arts can effect positive change with public participation.
